The aim of this award is to give the student the knowledge and understanding
of all forms of communications from simple signals using hands and whistles
through to correct radio procedure.
Signals
This award has the following elements
- Demonstrate the three whistle signals used by lifeguards
- Demonstrate how to signal "Assistance Required" from the water
- Demonstrate how to indicate "Message Understood" from land
- Demonstrate how to indicate "Message not understood" from land
and from the water
- Demonstrate how to indicate "All Clear" from the water
Customer Relations
This award has the following elements
- Explain what is meant by customer relations
- Discuss different situations where a lifeguard deals with the public
- Explain what is meant by "Body Language"
- Explain why an understanding of body language is important for
lifeguards
- Demonstrate how to deal with a friend climbing on rocks which may be
dangerous
Radios
This award has the following elements
- Explain what lifeguards use radios for
- Explain what frequency lifeguards use
- Demonstrate how to end a radio message to mean "Message understood, I
will comply"
- Explain what it means to end a message with "OVER" and what it
means to end a message with "OUT"
- Describe what a call-sign is
- Demonstrate how you would make radio contact with "Lifeguard Beta"
when you are "Lifeguard Alpha"
- Explain what channel 16 is used for
- Use the phonetic alphabet to spell words
