Level One

Water Safety

  1. List four things which make water outside dangerous
  2. List what to do to stay safe in the pool

Self Rescue

  1. Enter deep water using a straddle entry and explain when it's used
  2. Scull head first or feet first for 10 meters
  3. Swim 75 meters on the front and 25 meters on the back
  4. Tread water for 90 second, giving the international distress signal for 30 seconds
  5. Surface dive - head first and recover an object from a depth of 1 meter
  6. Instruct a rescuer to offer you a piece of clothing and perform a reach rescue

Rescue

  1. Discuss what you should consider during the assessment stage before the start of any rescue
  2. Demonstrate the actions of an injured swimmer with an arm or leg injury
  3. Perform the back off when a casualty tries to grab you in the water
  4. Take up the stand off position away from a casualty
  5. Perform a Wade rescue with a pole
  6. Discuss when a rookie should perform a swim and tow rescue
  7. Timed rescue. In less than 4 minutes swim 100 meters. During the swim surface dive to recover an object from a depth of between 1 and 1.5 meters

Emergency Response

  1. Explain what DR ABC stands for
  2. Demonstrate the checks for danger, response and shouting for help. Show how to open the airway and check for breathing
  3. Demonstrate how to check for circulation
  4. Demonstrate rescue breathing for 1 minute
  5. Explain the signs and symptoms and demonstrate the treatment for shock

Level Two

Water Safety

  1. Explain what dangers to look out for at the beach
  2. Explain the third point of the water safety code

Self Rescue

  1. Enter deep water and swim 100 meters in less than 4 minutes
  2. Tread water for two minutes, giving the international distress signal
  3. Swim continuously 150 meters, half on the front and half on the back
  4. Swim Lifesaving backstroke or side stroke for 50 meters
  5. With a floating aid adopt the HELP position for 2 minutes, give the international Distress Signal for 30 seconds
  6. Remove clothing in shallow water
  7. Surface dive feet first and head first during a 50 meter swim

Rescue

  1. Demonstrate the actions of a weak swimmer
  2. Perform a Throw rescue with a rope
  3. Perform a swim with an aid Rescue (Accompanied)
  4. Put a Casualty in the support position
  5. Perform a swim and tow rescue using an extended Tow
  6. Perform a rescue in a simulated emergency

Emergency Response

  1. Explain the checks you perform on a casualty before starting Rescue Breathing
  2. Explain first aid treatment for hiccups
  3. Explain and demonstrate what to do if a casualty is bleeding

Level Three

Water Safety

  1. Explain why it is dangerous to swim in lakes or ponds
  2. Explain what the community Response forms are, how to use them and who to give them to

Self Rescue

  1. Perform a compact jump and explain when to use it
  2. Tread water for two minutes giving the international distress signal and shouting loudly for help
  3. Swim 50 meters dressed, remove clothing except for swimwear, then swim 50 meters
  4. Swim 25 meters, during the swim surface dive-head first and swim 2 meters under water fully submerged
  5. Climb out of deep water without using the steps
  6. Explain the difference between a lifejacket and a buoyancy jacket and when to use them
  7. Explain why ice is dangerous and what to do if you fall through

Rescue

  1. Demonstrate the actions of a non-swimmer
  2. Swim 40 meters to a casualty and perform a swim with an aid rescue (accompanied) for 35 meters
  3. Perform a swim with an aid (Non-Contact) and help the casualty to climb out
  4. Explain when to make physical contact with a casualty in the water and when you should not
  5. Perform the back off and take up the stand up position
  6. Perform a swim and tow rescue using a support tow
  7. Timed rescue. In less than 6 minutes swim 150 meters, during the swim surface dive to recover an object from a depth of between 1 and 1.5 meters

Emergency Response

  1. Demonstrate the checks for danger, response and shouting for help
  2. Demonstrate how to open the airway, check for breathing and check circulation on a casualty
  3. Explain the correct action in a case where the pulse is absent (no signs of circulation)
  4. Explain what to do for a nosebleed

Self Rescue

  1. Perform a Straddle entry wearing clothing and swim 100 meters
  2. Dressed and with a floating aid, adopt the HELP position for 4 minutes
  3. Enter the water in clothing and swim 200 meters. Remove your clothing and swim another 75 meters
  4. Swim underwater in blacked-out goggles through a hoop
  5. Demonstrate how to walk across a current of flowing water and explain what to do
  6. Explain why the HELP position conserves heat

Rescue

  1. Demonstrate the actions of an unconscious swimmer
  2. Demonstrate how to turn an unconscious casualty in the water
  3. Swim 50 meters to an unconscious casualty and perform a swim and tow rescue using an extended tow for 20 meters
  4. Pull ashore an unconscious Casualty
  5. Explain what the Rookie Action Plan is
  6. Timed Rescue. In less then 6 minutes and 30 seconds swim 175 meters, during this surface dive swim 3 meters underwater and recover an object from a depth of 1 to 1.5 meters
  7. Perform a swim and Tow rescue a clothing tow
  8. Rescue a casualty in a simulated emergency

Emergency Response

  1. Demonstrate how to check for danger, response and shouting for help. Demonstrate how to open the airway and check for breathing and for circulation with a casualty on the front
