Level One

Water Safety

  1. Explain why it is difficult to swim in cold water and why cold water is dangerous
  2. Explain what to do to stay safe on the beach

Self Rescue

  1. Enter shallow water safety using the steps
  2. Completely submerge with open eyes and breath out under water
  3. Float for 30 seconds on the front or back with a floating aid, then stand up from floating

Rescue

  1. Explain what to do when seeing someone in difficulty in the sea
  2. Perform a Throw rescue with a floating aid, and instruct the casualty how to get out of the water

Emergency Response

  1. Demonstrate the checks for danger and response, shouting for help and opening airway
  2. Demonstrate how to check if a casualty is breathing
  3. Demonstrate how to place a casualty in the recovery position and explain when to put a casualty in the recovery position
  4. Give a friend instructions for getting help

Level Two

Water Safety

  1. Describe the safest places to swim and explain why they are safe
  2. Name 3 dangers of water in and around the home

Self Rescue

  1. Demonstrate a slide-in entry into shallow water and explain when to use it
  2. Demonstrate the international distress signal and explain when it is used
  3. Swim 10 meters without using an aid
  4. Float on the back for 1 minute, holding a floating aid and shouting for help
  5. Swim 10 meters Lifesaving backstroke or side stroke
  6. Catch a rope thrown by a rescuer 5 meters away and pulled to the side
  7. Explain the characteristics of the different swimming strokes

Rescue

  1. List the rookie action plan, and discuss the different rescues
  2. Perform a Wade rescue using a stick or a piece of clothing and help the casualty out
  3. Explain what to do if someone has fallen through the ice

Emergency Response

  1. Demonstrate the checks for danger, response and shouting for help
  2. Demonstrate how to open the airway and check for breathing
  3. Demonstrate how to turn a casualty from front to back
  4. Explain what action to take in case of an asthma attack

Water Safety

  2. Explain the second point of the water safety code and what to do to follow it

Self Rescue

  1. Swim 25 meters
  2. Catch a floating aid and kick 25 meters to the side
  3. Demonstrate the HELP position and explain how it conserves heat in cold water
  4. Tread water for 30 seconds
  5. Swim 10 meters on the back and then 10 meters on the front
  6. Surface dive - feet first and recover an object from the bottom in water no more than 1 meter deep
  7. Climb out of shallow water without using the steps

Rescue

  1. Explain the best way to perform a Row rescue
  2. Demonstrate a Throw rescue with a rope and instruct the casualty how to get out of the water
  3. Recognise the four types of casualty

Emergency Response

  1. Demonstrate the check for danger, response and shouting for help. Show how to open the airway and check for breathing

  6. Climb out from deep water without using the steps
  7. Explain what to do if in difficulty in the sea

Rescue

  1. Explain the 3 A's for Rescue
  2. Help a casualty from the water without using the steps
  3. Explain when and why a rescuer's own safety comes first

Emergency Response
